#RPGaDay 2017 – Day 31

What do you anticipate most for gaming in 2018?

What do you anticipate most for gaming in 2018?

I’m not going to speculate for the industry. It’s enough just to keep pace with my own gaming intentions and attempt to see them materialise.

This year I’ve begun to make some breakthroughs against stuff I have been flirting with for a while. It’s mostly around running games and building my confidence and capability as a GM. Next year I’d like to build on that.

So, in 2018, I’d like to host two extended campaigns online:

  1. A fantasy one inspired by Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (which may or may not use Cubicle 7’s forthcoming 4th edition). There’s been some interest in resurrecting The Enemy Within, which could be a blast.
  2. And another using Unknown Armies – probably modern, but potentially historical. I’ve enjoyed trying to make sense of that over at On Armies Unknown, which I’d like to continue to develop.

I’m lucky to live in the de facto capital of the UK convention scene – Sheffield now hosts six full weekend conventions a year in a re-purposed garrison. I’m running my first game at the original one of those in a few weeks. Turns out that’s been fully pre-booked, which fills me with excitement and anxiety in equal doses. I intend to offer more in 2018.

What I’ve picked up so far this year (plus likely WFRP in the final quarter) will keep me stocked with enough material to enjoy. It’s solid content that deserves some long play. Beyond that, I’m doubling down on resisting the urge to be an early adopter. I’ll not avoid new products, but anticipate getting my fix of those through more online and convention play.

So, for my gaming, 2018 is a year of consolidation. It’s time to get better at the craft of gaming, and time to give back by hosting more games.
